333.3m NEWSLETTER March 10, 2025

Greetings Track Enthusiasts!

The weather is turning, the number of new riders is growing and the COS Velodrome has been buzzing! We all remember the day when we first started riding the track and how much fun we had; afterall that’s why we’re still turning up after all these years later. Everyone please remember, we’re all ambassadors of the sport. Without new people, new energy and more participation, our sport fades into obscurity. Be sure to be supportive, uplifting and engaging to the new people who are showing up every week! Do you have family or friends who are interested in becoming certified or trying the track? Our Next LTV course is March 25 and 27. We’re planning to roll out multiple dates in April, including a women’s only session! Remember at the Colorado Springs Velodrome, “We just want you to ride!”

RACING UPDATE

We’ve successfully kicked off the Friday Night Racing! We broke our record for turnout for a race night and populated nearly every category. Thanks to all who attended and pedaled their mightiest. Results are available on the website and through USA Cycling’s Results & Rankings database. Remember: We will award a custom Zipp 404 wheelset to the winners of Men & Women P123, Men & Women Cat 4 and Men & Women Junior fields (6 fields in total).

Our Zipp Wheels Leaderboard for the series overall will be updated after each night of racing.

Winner of each omnium will be awarded 1 point and 1 point will also be awarded for winning a sprint bracket. Ties to be broken on the final night of racing August 15th’s Omnium.

Currently our local hero Clever Martinez leads the Men’s P/1/2/3 with fellow international rider Izzy Bryenton leading the P1/2/3 Women. Seth Hurley and Avery Cavner have jumped out to lead the Cat 4’s and the Kids On Bikes Junior racers Will Friesema and Izzy Dalton rounding out the leader board.

MARCH RACE DATE

Please join us for our next Race on March 28th! Thanks to Vie13’s excellent turnaround, we received our new cloth racing numbers last week, just in time for the next race! We’re asking that everyone please put down a $5.00 cash deposit on their race number as we’d like to re-use these numbers for as long as we are able! The deposit will be returned to you when the number is returned!

TRAINING UPDATE

With the increased participation in open training, we’ve been experiencing one of those “good problems.” We are working to add a weekend day of Training on some select Saturdays from 9:00 am-11:00 am. The USOPC has graciously agreed to staffing that time. But we still need your support, to secure these sessions we require: 1. Volunteer Track Attendant and 2. Medical Personnel. Please contact Robert to confirm interest and availability at rmayfield@usacycling.org Once those dates are finalized they will be added to Bike Reg, Season/Monthly Pass Holders will have access to those days without additional cost. Single session purchases will be available for $25.00.

Additionally, We will be introducing an Organized Elite Training Night for those who are focused on competing at Nationals. This session is limited to Men’s Cat 2/Women’s Cat 3 or better, with a total rider limit of 10. We will add to the rider limit based on demand, interest and increased competency/ability. Dates to be determined!

High School Mountain Bikers Try The Track!

Kids on Bikes is excited to offer High School MTB Learn the Velo for the month of November.  Now that your race season has come to an end, this opportunity is perfect for your teams.  This program is structured specifically for your team members.

The program lasts for 3 weeks and it starts at the beginning of November.  The first week, we'll teach the rules of the velodrome and how to ride safely (this must be attended first).  Then, the following weeks we'll have structured training and even some practice races. They need to sign up for the first two Sessions to Learn the Velo and then sign up for Youth Open training to finish out the month! We provide everything for free including the bikes!

As you know, this would benefit your athletes strength and cardio and they may just take a liking to it and become our next group of racers or national champs!   Our coaching squad is amazingly talented in track racing and cannot wait to share their passion with you.

More information is provided at this link:Colorado Springs Velodrome Learn The Velo! Online Registration (bikereg.com) and for the FREE USAC license to use the velodrome, please have them use this code on the USAC website: KOBCOS24

A 2023 Recap From Pat:

Hello track cycling enthusiast!

I want to start this off by simply saying “Thank You” to everyone who came out to ride, race and support the local track community this season in Colorado Springs.

We took some big strides this year and I wanted to point them out, so everyone understands what was accomplished and where we want to be in the near future.

As we did in 2022 the velodrome hosted two nights of community training on a weekly basis. From May through September.

What we added to those days were “Learn the Velodrome” classes. These classes were held “FREE OF CHARGE” and over 50 riders, including 15 Juniors, took part in these classes.  As a result close to 20 new riders have purchased track bicycles, taken subsequent classes and are expecting to part of the community in larger way next summer!!

The Community training time had over 600 rider days as 92 individual riders took part in training.

With the help of Robert Mayfield (Who should receive a round of applause every time he come to the track now), Maddie Godby, Claire Sanderson and of course the sponsors (BIG Thank you to Ryan Crissey!)  RACING came back to the Velodrome!   We had nights that highlighted sprinting, keirin, points races and more.  The racing was fast and furious AND SAFE!  One of things I love most about track cycling is when juniors and new riders are sharing the track in warm-up before the races with Olympians and World Champions!  And yes that happened in Colorado Springs nearly every race night!   It had been too many years since we had track racing in CO.  So again thanks to ALL OF YOU!

So What’s next?

Well tomorrow is the FINAL Community training day for 2023.  I know we had hoped to continue on for another few weeks but that wasn’t possible .  So we hope to see as many of you come out to get a little riding in and say goodbye for the season.

What will be happening during the cold months ahead you ask?

USOPC and USA Cycling are working together to ensure that the positive steps we’ve taken this season are just the beginning for a bigger and better season in 2024.

There is a new community track cycling website for the Colorado Springs Velodrome where you will find  news, and info as soon as its available

https://www.coloradospringsvelodrome.org/

That’s it for now but I look forward to a great year in 2024.  Hope to see you all soon
